Healthy Eating While Breastfeeding
If you’re embarking on the new journey of breastfeeding, we’d like to offer our congratulations. That means you have a new babe (yay!) and you are also trying to make healthy choices for your child. There is a common misnomer about breastfeeding, though: breastfeeding does NOT guarantee easy weight loss. It is vitally important for your health that you eat well and healthfully while you breastfeed.
Keep a healthy diet
After all the strain of pregnancy, please don’t go hog wild just yet. Your child is drinking up the nutrients you put in your body through what you eat. If you are only eating what appeals to you regardless of its nutritional value, your baby may not be getting what he needs.
Remember that your baby will draw everything he needs from you even if you don’t have it to give. Some moms have lost their teeth because they didn’t supplement their diet with extra calcium. When their baby took what it needed, their mom’s body suffered.
Keep up your energy and strength by eating healthy snacks frequently and replenish your body.
If you’re not the type to count calories, no need to start now. Follow your body and if you are hungry, eat. If you’re not, don’t. But if you are interested in the numbers, keep in mind that a breastfeeding mom needs about 500 more calories than normal.
Consume a variety of foods
Remember that old adage “Variety is the spice of life” and adapt it to your foods. Moderation is key to a healthy diet. Not all carbs are bad and some fats and sugars are good also. Talking to a nutritionist can help you understand how all these aspects of food work in your body to make a healthier you.
