How to Relax at the OBGYN

Heading to the OB-GYN is a black dot on your otherwise perfect afternoon, but we’ve all been there. The long wait in the waiting room, closed off reception, and thoughts of cold devices being used to violate your personal space are just a few of the things that can put you off. But, there are some ways you can feel better about heading to the OB-GYN.

1. Relax, it’s important

If nothing else keeps you calm, remember that this is a vital appointment. The doctor is going to check you to make sure you are free of problems in your reproductive system, can check for hormone problems, and will look for cancer. With a check-up every year to three years, you will more than likely be able to catch any problem that comes up before it becomes a serious illness.

2. Prepare yourself

If you’re worried about smelling oddly or standing out in any way, don’t fret. These doctors are trained to look for those issues specifically, because it could mean you have a medical issue. Think you have a yeast infection or other problem? Let them know about it and don’t be ashamed. This is their job, and they are meant to help you with these problems.

If you want to be less worried about it, you can take a little time to prepare at home. Shaving, using deodorant, and generally feeling clean can go a long way toward making you feel better about your appointment.

3. Recognize that you’re not the only one who feels this way

Having a doctor look inside you while using a tool to scrape your cervix isn’t pleasant. You should be aware that nearly every woman has gone through this kind of exam, though, and we’re all aware of what it feels like and how uncomfortable it can be. If you feel anxious or if something hurts, simply let the doctor know. The more you can relax, the less uncomfortable the exam will be; do what you have to to relax and stay calm.
